Special Precautions for R410A
Introduction
R410A is a near azeotrope refrigerant mixture of hydro fluorocarbon (HFC) which is environmental friendly.
It has Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP=0) and this conform to Montreal Protocol regulations. It has no
flame propagation and a low toxic refrigerant (rated as A1 by ARI). R410A is a mixture of R32 (50%) and
R125 (50%). It will be the new generation of refrigerant to replace R22.
Characteristic
R410A system has as operating pressure of about 1.6 times higher than R22 at the same temperature. It
possessed better heat transfer properties and lower pressure loss across the system. It will boast a better
and higher efficiency system. However, the two (R32 & R125) components of R410A have different
evaporating temperatures thus charge only liquid phase during field charging.
R410A compressor uses polyol-ester oil (POE) as lubricant which is prone to moisture contamination
(hydroscopic). It has to be treated in a more cautiously manner than other conventional mineral oil.
R410A is chemically stable refrigerant. However, if the refrigerant leaks into an airtight room when the
vapour specific gravity is higher than the air, it will stay at the lower part of the room and cause oxygen
starvation area. If it contacts with fire, toxic gas may be generated.
R410A System Handling Guidelines
1. Do not mix R410A with other refrigerant into the system.
2. Use only exclusive flare tools, manifold gauge, charging hose, pressure gauge, torque wrench,
vacuum pump and gas leak detector for R410A.
3. R410A pressure is about 1.6 times higher than R22. Extra caution when performing installation and
service.
4. Do not expose the system for too long. POE oil will absorb moisture into the system that will generate
acid and cause capillary clogging or compressor motor winding damage. Cover temporary the
refrigerant valve or copper tube opening when performing installation or servicing. Install a bi-flow filter
dryer (two-way) along the liquid piping to absorb the unwanted moisture. Residue POE oil in the piping
and components can absorb moisture from the air.
5. Identified refrigerant before charging. R410A refrigerant cylinder is pink coated. Charge only R410A
liquid phase into the units.
6. Vacuum the system to –76cmHg thoroughly to remove incompressible air and moisture.
7. After complete installation, check the whole system for leakage. Additional R410A charge when
leaking is not allowable. If leakage occurs, fix it and then evacuate thoroughly before recharge with
R410A.
8. Do not top up additional lubricant oil especially mineral oil into the compressor or air conditioning
system.
9. If refrigerant gas leak occurs during installation / servicing, make sure the area is ventilate fully.
10. Unauthorized modification of the units is not allowed. In case of refrigerant or water leakage, electric
short circuit and system breakdown, please contact your nearest authorized dealer or distributor.
